Wine Taste Off

I am headed up to Silicon Valley tomorrow for Noah Kagan’s first annual wine taste off. The idea is for a wine taste off between entrepreneurs and VCs. I’m not really a wine drinker but I am looking foward to the event as it should be a ton of fun. I will take pictures and post them when I return in a few days.

Danny Sullivan is Leaving Search Engine Watch

Danny Sullivan is leaving Search Engine Watch and most likely the Search Engine Strategies conference series as well. This news is creating quite the buzz around the web.

First let me echo what many have already said; Incisive Media is pretty much retarded for not moving mountains to keep Danny around. Search Engine Watch and SES are what they are because of Danny.

As the “Godfather” of search, Danny has played a big role in shaping our entire industry to what it has become today. I wish Danny the best of luck wherever this new path takes him. He will undoutably be successful and the industry will gladly follow wherever he goes.

Links, Links, and More Links

There is a lot of good link building resources floating around right now.

Todd Malicoat’s great list of 12 different kinds of links and how to get them.

Aaron Wall and Andy Hagans listed 101 ways to increase your link pop.

Neil Patel breaks link building down into a 5 post series.

Matt Inman from SEOmoz puts on the blackhat and shows us how to get 20 .gov links in 20 minutes.

Aaron Pratt crowns the winner in the Linkbaiting 2006 Awards. Aaron I’d really like to see this taken to the next level. Good stuff.

Not So Stupid Trends of Marketing 2.0

Noah Kagan wrote a post today on the Top 5 Stupid Trends of Marketing 2.0.

1. Our product is viral
2. Paying $10,000/month to advertise on Techcrunch
3. You need a blog
4. Digg will save us
5. Oh, don’t worry we have a MySpace badge.

You should really head over to Noah’s site and read the description of each one before you read my counters, otherwise you’ll probably be wondering what the hell I’m talking about.

Noah’s a friend of mine and he’s a very smart guy, but this time I think he’s gone a little overboard with the whole hippy marketing thing. Just kidding Noah. Anyways, it’s on bro.

Your Google Top 10

Why is it that so many companies wait until the bad results already show up in Google before they start managing their reputation? They should be hitting this stuff the minute it’s published. It’s much easier to manage “Your Google Top Ten” if you do. Although it’s just as important to respond immediately, regardless of Google.

Back From SES and WordCamp

I just got home from being up in Northern California for the week. We started off last weekend in San Francisco where we attended WordCamp and some of the parties that took place around that. Neil and I were asked to give a Q&A on SEO for blogging. I think it went pretty good and we got some great feedback from it. Bill Slawski from SEO by the Sea was in the audience and helped us by providing additional answers for the audience when needed.

Complete trip summary and pictures after the break. Read the rest of this entry »

Interview With Guy Kawasaki

I did an interview with Guy Kawasaki over email a couple weeks ago and I just posted it up on Pronet Advertising. I asked him some questions about venture capital, marketing, and his personal success. It’s worth the read. For those of you who don’t know who Guy is you should check out his blog.
