Rand Fishkin has a great post on speaking at SES, and although he tailored the post specifically to speaking at SES, I think it would apply in just about any public speaking situation. He covers everything from how to get a speaking slot to engaging the audience so no one falls asleep on you.

Rand is about 3 months late posting this as it would have come in very handy when I spoke at SES for the first time in San Jose. Rand was actually on my panel and let me tell you; he is a brilliant public speaker and knows what he is doing. I definitely learned a lot from him.
