Fatal Shark Attack in San Diego

This just happened down the street from my house, a San Diego man was attacked by a shark this morning and bled to death. Apparently this is the first fatal attack in 50 years in my area. This is pretty scary considering I was just about to paddle out for a surf.

I have never really worried about attacks around here just because they are so rare. I guess now I will have something to be cautious of. This is sad news and my thoughts go out to this man’s family.

    :(

It’s a sad day for surfers, beach-goers and sharks alike. No one wins when nature and man collide. It’s an unfortunate event, but incredibly rare and hopefully the media doesn’t demonize sharks now.

Did they say what kind of shark or what the bite seemed to signify, i.e. killing or “tasting”? Unfortunately, they’ll bite and let go just to see what something is. My Dad was bumped by one a few years back while swimming for PT. The thing seemed to realize my Dad was pretty big and not worth its time and both of took off in different directions. It still scared the crap out of him!

    Good luck!

Very rare, especially in my area. It was a white shark and they are pretty notorious for attacking first and asking questions later…. which means they will usually bite their prey and then let it bleed to death before eating. In human cases it’s usually mistaken identity… we look like seals on our boards so they bite and when they realize how bad we taste they usually take off.
